So, you've already defined your target audience - now what?

Now, it's time to research your audience to find out what interests and motivates them.

Did you know you can use Instagram to learn more about your followers and what they care about? This information will help you figure out what type of content you need to post.

Here are some strategies you can use to get to know your audience better.

1. Find out your followers' demographics.

Go to your "Insights" and click "Audience." From there, you'll be able to see your followers broken down by gender, age range and location. If you decide to run an ad, you can use this information to get it in front of your target audience.

You can also use your followers' demographics to decide what type of photos and videos you need to create. You want to use elements that speak to your audience.

2. Use Instagram polls.

If you want to find out what your audience wants, why not ask them? Use the polls feature in your stories to ask relevant questions that will help you get to know them better.

3. Send a DM to followers who regularly engage in your content.

Sending a direct message to your followers is a great way to thank them for following you and request feedback. You can ask them what kind of content they'd like to see you post.

4. Ask for feedback in your feed.

Do you see a theme here? I guess you can blame my journalism background, but never be afraid to ask questions.

You can also post questions directly to your feed. Ask your followers what they want to see - short or long captions, more stories, etc.

5. Watch your followers' behavior on Instagram.

While this is my favorite song by Sting, please do not stalk anyone in real life. But it is worth checking out your followers' activity on Instagram.

Click on people who commented or liked your latest posts to see what hashtags and other accounts they're following. You can also check out the language they use in the captions of their posts.
